Postdoctoral Research Fellowship (BPD)
The University of Aveiro (UAVR) in Aveiro, Portugal, opens a position for a Postdoctoral Research Fellowship (BPD) in the scope of the project PERICLES: “PrEseRvIng and sustainably governing Cultural heritage and Landscapes in European coastal and maritime regionS”, reference H2020-SC6-CULT-COOP-2017-two-stage (Nr. 770504), financed by the European Commission Programme H2020.

Scientific area: Social sciences, economics, Tourism, Human Geography.

Position: Postdoc research fellow.

Eligibility: The candidate should hold a PhD in Social Sciences, Economics, Tourism, Human Geography, or related areas. Candidates should demonstrate experience working in marine governance, tourism and cultural heritage. Preference will be given to candidates with previous experience working in research projects and capacity to work in English. The fellow will undertake the day-to-day management of the project, under the direction of the PI of the project, being responsible for the development of several tasks, and should preferably have the following knowledge, skills and experience:

  • Knowledge of marine governance, coastal and maritime tourism, coastal and maritime cultural heritage;

  • Understanding of the concepts of social and economic sustainability;

  • Experience organizing events (workshops, seminars, meetings)

  • Good track record of scientific publications;

  • Availability to travel;

  • Able to work on own and in a team;

  • Able to work to deadlines, reliable;

  • Able to manage a project;

  • Fluent English speaking and writing;

  • Experience developing surveys and questionnaires, carrying out face-to-face interviews, and analyzing survey data is desirable;

  • Speaking Portuguese is desirable (but not an exclusion factor).

  • GIS skills is desirable (but not an exclusion factor).

Workplan: The postdoctoral research fellow will be in charge of day-to-day management of the project, being responsible for the development of several tasks for the project, and managing the team.  The person employed will work closely with a Portuguese PhD candidate, with knowledge about the local area. The workplan will include: Prepare, attend, organize project meetings, workshops and interviews with relevant stakeholders; Write progress reports, press release and newsfeeds (in English) tailored to different target audiences (twitter, project webpage), policy briefs, and scientific publication; Scope for funding opportunities and write applications for funding (where appropriate). 

Place of work: The work will be developed in the Department of Environment and Planning, University of Aveiro, Portugal, under the scientific supervision of Dr. Cristina Pita.

Grant conditions: The grant will have an initial duration of 6 months, starting in February 2019. The fellowship may be renewed until the end of the project, and must be undertaken exclusively[i], according to the Portuguese Law 40/2004, of 18 of August (Scientific Research Fellowship holder statutes), Fellowship Regulation of the Portuguese Foundation for Science and Technology in force and the rules of UAVR Research Grants (Regulamento n.º 341/2011, de 20 de maio).

Monthly maintenance allowance: A maintenance allowance of 1495€/net (tax free) will be paid each month, through inter-bank transfer, check or equivalent modality, in accordance with the grant amounts set by the Fellowship Regulation of the Portuguese Foundation for Science and Technology (see: 

Selection criteria: The selection criteria will consist of: (1) Curriculum vitae (30%) which meets the eligibility criteria; (2) Experience with stakeholder engagement (specially marine stakeholders, e.g., fishers, policy-makers) (20%); (3) Previous professional experience working in projects related to coastal and maritime tourism, coastal and maritime cultural heritage, marine governance (20%); (4) track record of publications in topics related to marine governance, marine tourism, aspects related to cultural heritage (20%); (4) Excellent knowledge of English (written and spoken) (10%). It is also important that the candidate has the capacity to work in an international team.

The selection jury will exercise the right to contact and interview candidates should they require further information or clarification about their application. In the event that no applicant has the necessary profile, the jury reserves the right to close the call without any recruitment.

Composition of the evaluation panel: Dr Cristina Pita, Research Assistant at University of Aveiro (President of the jury), Dr. Ana Lillebo, Director of the Centre for Environment and Marine Studies (CESAM)(member), and Professor Carlos Costa, Full Professor at University of Aveiro, Director of the Department of Economics, Managemet, Industrial Engineering and Tourism.
