In the context of the project Urban Nature Labs (UNaLab; Grant Agreement No. 730052), financed by the European Union’s Horizon 2020 research and innovation programme (Topic SCC-2-2016-2017: Smart Cities and Communities Nature based solutions), please find open the concourse for award of a Postdoc Grant (BPD) at the Centre for Environmental and Marine Studies (CESAM) – Department of Environment and Planning (DAO) of the University of Aveiro (UAVR).

Position: Research Fellowship for candidates with a Ph.D. degree; Post-Doctoral grant (BPD).

Admission requirements: Ph.D. degree in Environmental Sciences/Engineering or equivalent experience/qualification.

Essential selection criteria:

  • Experience with air quality modelling systems, in particular with WRF-CHEM.

  • Experience with databases, data management, data examination and data representation.

  • Knowledge of mathematical programming software (e.g. Python, MatLab or FORTRAN) and GIS applications (e.g. ArcGIS), and their application.

  • Ability to work harmoniously in a multi-disciplinary team environment.

  • Demonstrate enthusiasm, high personal professional standards, independence, motivation and commitment to the job.

  • Very good written and spoken English. Fluency in Portuguese is desirable.

Job description: Within the overall objective of the UNaLab project, the key functions of the researcher include, for the different UNaLab cities: i) collate, analyse and manage atmospheric emissions inventories; (ii) simulate the urban air quality for the reference situation; (iii) validate the air quality modelling results; (iv) work with climate scenarios in order to simulate urban air quality under future climate; v) communicate the work with colleagues, stakeholders and clients by way of dialogue, public presentations, research reports and scientific papers; and vi) provide programming, data management and literature review support as required, and perform miscellaneous job-related duties as assigned.

Legislation framework: A fellowship contract will be celebrated according to the regulations defined by FCT “Regulations for Advanced Training and Qualification of Human Resources”, in accordance with Portuguese Law nº. 40/2004 of August 18, modified by the Law-Decree n.º 202/2012, of August 27, and modified by the Law-Decree nº 233/2012, of October 29 and by the Law nº 12/2013 of January 29 and by the Law-Decree nº89/2013 of July 09 (Statute of the Scientific Research Grantee); as well as in accordance with the current “Regulamento de Bolsas de Investigação da FCT - Fundação para a Ciência e a Tecnologia”, (FCT-Foundation for Science and Technology research grants regulation), ( and “Regulamento de Bolsas de Investigação Científica da Universidade de Aveiro”, (UAVR grants regulation), (

Working place and scientific supervision: The work will be carried out at the Department of Environment and Planning (DAO), Centre for Environmental and Marine Studies (CESAM) of the University of Aveiro (UAVR), under the scientific supervision of Prof. Ana Isabel Miranda.

Grant duration: The grant will be for a period of 12 months and may be renewed successively until a maximum period of 25 months. Expected starting date is May, 1st 2019. The attribution of the grant is undertaken under an exclusive dedication regime.

Monthly allowance: The fellowship amounts 1509,80 €/month. The fellowship holder will have a personal accident insurance and, if not covered by any social protection scheme, can ensure the right to social security through adherence to the voluntary social insurance scheme, pursuant to “Código dos Regimes Contributivos do Sistema Previdencial de Segurança Social”. The fellowship will be paid monthly by check, bank transfer, or another equivalent method.

Selection method: Candidates will be assessed based on research and project experience (40%), reports and publications (45%) and motivation letter (15%). The Selection Committee may decide on the need to have an interview (second stage of evaluation), in person or by tele-/videoconference. In that case, the final classification will be obtained by averaging the result of the first stage (50% weight) and second stage (50% weight) evaluations. The Selection Committee reserves the right not to select any candidate if none of the candidates possesses minimal requirements (final total classification higher than 50%).

Candidates with foreign academic diplomas are obliged to present records of the equivalence/recognition of such diplomas and the conversion of the respective final notes to the Portuguese classification scale (whenever a final classification is attributed with the foreign diploma), issued by the Directorate-General for Higher Education or by a Portuguese public higher education establishment (regulated by Decree-Law no. 341/2007, of 12 October) or, in alternative, present the document of equivalence/recognition of such foreign qualifications to the corresponding Portuguese qualifications, issued by a Portuguese public higher education establishment (regulated by Decree-Law no. 283/83, of 21 June).
