The Instituto de Telecomunicações (IT), located at the University of Aveiro (UA) comprises, hereafter, an Optical Society of America’s Student Chapter. Funded by UA students and researchers, the Student Chapter is a selection of the Optical Society of America (OPA) that aims to engage students in optics and photonics in a network of contacts throughout the world, while organizing and participating in conferences, workshops and various activities related to teaching and learning process involving Optics.

The Student Chapter of the University of Aveiro is the first to be established in Portugal; it was founded by Álvaro Almeida, André Albuquerque, Gil Fernandes, Telmo Almeida and Vanessa Duarte, students from the Departments of Physics, Electronics, Telecommunications and Informatics, as well as researchers in the IT. The scientific guidance is under the responsibility of Rogério Nogueira, professor in the UA’s Department of Physics and also a researcher at the IT.

“This Student Chapter has the objective of dissemination optics and photonics in the primary, secondary and university levels of Education, as well as simultaneously establishing a closer relationship between the academia and the business community", states Álvaro Almeida. The Student Chapter also aims to promote lectures, workshops and other events of scientific and informative nature.

All UA students with an interest in the area are invited to join the Student Chapter, where they may benefit of discounts on conferences, access to scientific articles, among others." says Alvaro Almeida.

The OSA gathers scientists, engineers, educators and entrepreneurs in the Optics and Photonics areas. The organization totalizes more than 18,000 individual members in over 100 countries.
