Post-doctoral Research Fellowship (Bolsa de Pós-Doutoramento) - BPD/FUTURAR/2017
In the scope of the research project Air Quality in Portugal in 2030 – a Policy Support (FUTURAR; PTDC/AAG-MAA/2569/2014 - POCI-01-0145-FEDER-016752), financed by the applicable financial framework (FCT/MECTES through national funds and when applicable co-funded by FEDER – PT2020 partnership agreement), please find open the call to award one Post-doctoral Research Fellowship (Bolsa de Pós-Doutoramento) for a PhD graduate at the Centre for Environmental and Marine Studies (CESAM) and Department of Environment and Planning (DAO) of the University of Aveiro (UAVR).

Scientific field: Environmental Sciences and Global changes

Requirements: PhD’s degree in Atmospheric Sciences, Environmental Sciences, Environmental Engineering or related field is needed. Preference is given to candidates graduated in Environmental Engineering.

Essential selection criteria:

- Experience with regional scale meteorology and/or air quality numerical modelling.

- Knowledge in the subject of emissions and air quality management, thus acknowledging the inherent relationship between technologies and instruments, emissions, air pollution, and associated impacts.

- Knowledge/experience of programming languages in Linux/Unix environment (Fortran, Python, R) and GIS applications (e.g. ArcGIS).

- Ability to work harmoniously in a multi-disciplinary team environment.

- Demonstrate enthusiasm, high personal professional standards, independence, motivation and commitment to the job and ability to communicate well his/her ideas.

- Excellent written and spoken English. Knowledge of Portuguese is an asset.

Work plan: The successful candidate will work in the FUTURAR research project, supporting several tasks, namely:

1 - Support the development of emission scenarios for Portugal suitable for air quality modelling applications, i.e. gridded emissions by activity sector and pollutant.

2 - Perform air quality simulations for past and future years by the application of a regional chemical transport model for different emission scenarios.

Legislation framework: A fellowship contract will be celebrated according to the regulations defined by FCT “Regulations for Advanced Training and Qualification of Human Resources”, in accordance with Portuguese Law 40/2004, of 18 August (Scientific Research Fellow Statute), as amended and republished by Decree-Law No. 202/2012 of 27 August, and as amended by Decree-Law No. 233/2012 of 29 October and by Law No. 12/2013, of January 29, and Decree-Law No. 89/2013 of 9 July as well as in accordance with the FCT, I.P. Work place: The work will be carried out at the CESAM and DAO of the UAVR in Aveiro, under the scientific supervision of Dr. Joana Ferreira

Duration: The duration of the grant is 12 months, and it is expected to start in July 2017, on an exclusive basis, potentially extendable until a maximum of 24 months.

Monthly allowance: The fellowship amounts to €1495.00 per month, according to table values of the fellowships awarded directly by the FCT, IP (http://alfa.fct.mctes.pt/apoios/bolsas/valores). The fellowship holder will have a personal accident insurance and, if not covered by any social protection scheme, can ensure the right to social security through adherence to the voluntary social insurance scheme, pursuant to “Código dos Regimes Contributivos do Sistema Previdencial de Segurança Social”. The fellowship will be paid monthly by check, bank transfer, or another equivalent method.

Selection method: Candidates will be assessed based on their CV, aptitude and motivation (first stage of evaluation), with the following evaluation:

- Publications and communications of scientific papers (40%);

- Proved experience in regional meteorological modelling and/or air quality (e.g. WRF-Chem, CAMx) (40%);

- Proved experience/background in Environmental Engineering (20%).

The Selection Committee may decide on the need to have an interview (second stage of evaluation), in person or by tele-/videoconference. In that case, the final classification will be obtained by averaging the result of the first stage (50% weight) and second stage (50% weight) evaluations. The Selection Committee reserves the right not to select any candidate if none of the candidates possesses minimal requirements (final total classification higher than 50%).

Publication/notification of results: The final results of the evaluation will become public, based on an ordered list of final classifications, and posted at the secretariat hall of the DAO as well as communicated to each applicant through the email address indicated in the application process.
