REN Biodiversity Chair Post-Doc Fellowship: Impact Assessment of Linear Infrastructures on Biodiversity (Reference: BPD-REN-IMPACT)

Admission requirements
The post-doc fellowship is suitable for candidates of any nationality holding a PhD degree in biology, ecology, or environmental sciences. The candidates should preferentially have a strong background in environmental impact assessment, namely on impacts in ecological systems. Other requirements include excellent verbal and written communication skills in Portuguese and experience in Geographic Information Systems (GIS). A proven publication track record in ecology is highly favored.

Work overview
The candidate will work closely with the REN Biodiversity Chair holder, Francisco Moreira, and with key contacts in REN (Portuguese power line company). There will be 3 different tasks to be developed:

  1. providing scientific advice to REN, namely through examining reports related to biodiversity components of impact and monitoring studies in power lines and other REN infrastructures;
  2. gathering scientific data available in “gray literature” available from REN and assessing possibility of doing scientific research based on these data. We are particularity interested in possible meta-analysis on bird collision, electrocution and mortality, effectiveness of bird flight diverters and effectiveness of mitigation and compensatory measures;
  3. compile and analyze the REN data on white storks nesting in power lines and undertake research on population trends, use of nest platforms, drivers of pylon use, effectiveness of nest-avoiding structures. The research will include data collection, statistical analysis and paper writing.


Fellowship
The duration of the fellowship is 12 months, renewable up to a maximum of 2.5 years.

Salary
Monthly stipend is €1495 according to the stipends established by FCT, I.P. in Portugal (http://alfa.fct.mctes.pt/apoios/bolsas/valores). Payment will be made by bank transfer on a monthly basis.

Work will be conducted at CIBIO-InBIO branch located at the Tropical Research Institute, Lisbon, Portugal

The call for applications is open between October 5 to 19, 2015. (24:00 GMT).

  1. Curriculum vitae (5 pages maximum, including a publication list and other relevant information in the context of the project research goals);
  2. Motivation Letter (including a brief description of research experience and why you are suitable for the announced position);

 

Selection criteria
The jury panel will select the best candidate based on his/her merit, through the analysis of:
Overall appreciation of the Curriculum Vitae, particularly the impact assessment experience (50%);
Experience and publications record in ecology (50%);
The top 3 candidates will be invited for an interview (weight of 25%), in person or by video-conference, to establish the final ranking.

Results announcement
