UA welcomes the VIII Congress on Planning and Management of Coastal Areas of Portuguese-speaking Countries
Farol da Barra
Between the 14th and the 16th October the University of Aveiro will welcome the VIII Congress on Planning and Management of Coastal Areas of Portuguese-speaking Countries. Keeping the traditional rotation in the organisation of this event, whose previous editions were held in Ponta Delgada (Azores), Recife (Brazil), Maputo (Mozambique), Funchal (Madeira), Itajaí (Brazil), Ilha da Boa Vista (Cabo Verde) and Maputo (Mozambique), this year’s edition is held in Aveiro, for the first time in mainland Portugal.

“The seven previous editions of the Congress, which started in 2001, enabled enriching moments of experience sharing that will certainly continue and will consolidate in its eighth edition”, claims the organisation of the event, the Portuguese Association of Water Resources, the Portuguese representative of the promoting associations.

There are different realities between the countries, regions, places and communities participating in the Congress. Those differences are of geographical, cultural, socioeconomic, institutional and environmental nature. The Congress has participants that represent countries with an almost continental dimension, as is the case of Brazil, and small countries, with Island characteristics as is the case of Cabo Verde. However, they share common problems in the coastal areas associated with the existence of vast maritime areas, the exploitation of living and non-living resources, urban and touristic occupation and activities, pressures on the ecosystems, scientific and technological development, risk control, the need for an integrated management and implementation of action programmes.

The VIII Congress on Planning and Management of Coastal Areas of Portuguese-speaking Countries promotes knowledge and experience sharing among participants. This year’s main theme is “The Contribution of Scientific Research for the Management of Coastal Areas”, covering the following subthemes: New tools for coastal areas planning; Tourism in coastal areas; Vulnerability and risk in coastal areas; Lagoon and estuarine systems; Physical processes and evolution of the coastline; Active participation in coastal areas; and Coastal areas: costs and benefits.

This year, in parallel with the Congress on Planning and Management of Coastal Areas of Portuguese-speaking Countries, the 1st International Conference on “Tourism in Coastal Areas – Opportunities and Challenges” will be held, with a specific Round Table organized on the theme and a Technical Session. Several posters on the theme “Tourism in Coastal Areas” will also be presented. A course on “Strategies for Adaptation and Protection of the Coastal Area to Climate Change” will be held on the 13th October 2015.

All informations on the meeting can be obtained here.
