Research Grant (BIM) for MSc holders in biological sciences
The University of Aveiro, in Portugal, opens a position for a MSc. Researcher fellowship (BIM) in the scope of the project CephsandChefs “Octopus, Squid, Cuttlefish, Sustainable Fisheries and Chefs” (EAPA_282/2016), financed by INTERREG Atlantic Area, European Regional Development Fund.

Scientific area: fisheries science.                                

Position: Research fellows

Eligibility: The candidate should hold a master degree in biological sciences. Preference will be given to candidates with previous experience working in relevant research projects and capacity to work in English. The fellow will work on the biological sampling and data analysis as well as the development of a “sustainability toolkit”, which will involve literature review and synthesis, as well as integrating biological information (from sampling) and stakeholder viewpoints (from interview surveys).

The candidate should have the following knowledge, skills and experience:

- Fluent English speaking,

- Excellent comprehension of written English/ability to write in English,

- Experience in collecting biological data on marine animals,

- Statistical and data analysis skills,

- Knowledge of Fisheries and stock assessment methods,

- Knowledge of ecological models,

- Some practical knowledge of cephalopod biology,

- Record of scientific publication (preferably),

- Driving license,

- Availability to travel (and spend extensive time periods in Spain),

- Able to work on own and in a team,

- Able to work to deadlines, reliable.

Workplan: The research fellow will work closely with a postdoctoral fellow of the project.

The workplan will include:

- Collecting and analysing biological data on cephalopods;

- Carrying out statistical analysis;

- Participation in the development of ecological models;

- Participation in carrying out interviews (e.g., fishers);

- Participation in review of scientific literature and other relevant information sources for development of the “sustainability toolkit”;

- Participation in writing progress reports, multi-lingual news updates, reports, press release and newsfeeds (in English and Portuguese) tailored to different target audiences (popular articles, blog entries, or industry news articles), policy briefs, and scientific publication.

Place of work: The work will be based in the ECOMARE/Department of Biology, University of Aveiro, Portugal, under the scientific supervision of Dr. Graham Pierce, and co-supervision of Dr. Ricardo Calado. The project also involves collaborative work with research institutions in Vigo, Spain.

Grant conditions: The grant will have an initial duration of 6 months, with estimated start in September 2019, renewable (pending evaluation) until the end of the project. The fellowship must be undertaken exclusively, according to the Portuguese Law 40/2004, of 18 of August (Scientific Research Fellowship holder statutes) and the Regulation of Research Grants from the Universidade de Aveiro – Regulamento n.º 341/2011, of 20 of May.

Value of the monthly maintenance stipend: 989,70 € (nine hundred and eighty-nine euros and seventy cents) net (tax free), per month, paid by cheque or bank transfer.

Selection criteria: The selection criteria will consist of: (1) Curriculum vitae (50%) which meets the eligibility criteria; (2) Experience with biological data sampling and analysis (15%); (3) previous experience working in projects related to Fisheries (15%); (4) Excellent knowledge of English (written and spoken), preferably with an English diploma (for non-English native speakers; the diploma is not compulsory) (20%). The selection jury will exercise the right to contact and interview candidates should they require further information or clarification about their application. In the event that no applicant has the necessary profile, the jury reserves the right to close the call without any recruitment.

Period of the call and application procedures: The call will be open between from the 13th to the 27th of June 2019.

Results: The result of the selection process will be communicated to the candidates by email.
