Research Grant for MSc – Ref.ª BIM1/TRUST/2019 (M/F)
The University of Aveiro (UAVR), Aveiro, Portugal – opens a call for applications to 1 (one) Research Grant (Bolsa de Investigação para Mestre), for holders of Master’s degree (BIM) in the scope of the project TRUST (FCT PTDC/GES-AMB/28591/2017), at the Centre for Governance, Competitiveness and Public Policies (GOVCOPP) and at Centre for Environmental and Marine Studies (CESAM) – Department of Environment and Planning (DAO) of the University of Aveiro (UAVR).

Admission requirements: Applicants should hold a M.Sc. degree[i] in Environmental Engineering, Environmental Policies and Management, Political Sciences. or equivalent qualification, with a minimum grade point average of 14 (on a 20-point scale). Preference will be given to candidates with knowledge in resilient communities, public participation and citizens networks.

Essential selection criteria:

  • Preference will be given to masters with research experience in the thematic areas of the Project TRUST;
  • Knowledge on resilience and sustainability of communities;
  • Knowledge on the relevance of the citizens’ role in the promotion of sustainability and of social innovation;
  • Knowledge and experience with quantitative and qualitative methods as well as case studies;
  • Excellent oral and written English skills.
  • Excellent teamwork skills, communication skills, planning and organizational skills, and spirit of initiative and pro-activeness;
  • Demonstrated enthusiasm, high personal professional standards, independence, motivation and commitment to the research project;

Job description: The purpose of the fellowship is the development of research activities regarding the collection of data about the case studies of the Project TRUST. Specifically, the candidate will carry the development of case studies with information gathering, analysis of situations, policies and measures, identification of specific methodologies that fit the research topics and preparation of reports. The work implies (i) document and data analysis; (ii) interviews to the members of the case studies; (iii) the production of reports, articles and other scientific publications; (iv) the participation in meetings, workshops, seminars and/or conferences; (v) the contribution to the expected results of the TRUST; and (vi) to perform miscellaneous job-related duties as assigned.

Legislation framework: A fellowship contract will be celebrated according to the regulations defined by FCT “Regulations for Advanced Training and Qualification of Human Resources”, in accordance with Portuguese Law 40/2004, of 18 August (Scientific Research Fellow Statute), as amended and republished by Decree-Law No. 202/2012 of 27 August, and as amended by Decree-Law No. 233/2012 of 29 October and by Law No. 12/2013, of January 29, and Decree-Law No. 89/2013 of 9 July, as well as in accordance with the FCT, I.P. Fellowships Regulation, in force ( and UAVR’s Regulation of Scientific Research Grants, as approved on 20 May 2011.

Working place and Scientific supervision: The work will be carried out at the Centre for Environmental and Marine Studies (CESAM) and Governance, Competitiveness and Public Policies (GOVCOPP) – Department of Environment and Planning (DAO) of the University of Aveiro (UAVR).

Grant duration: The grant will be for a period of 5 months, and it is expected to start between June and July, 2019. The attribution of the grant is undertaken under an exclusive dedication regime[ii].

Monthly allowance: The monthly amount of the grant is €989,70 corresponding to the monthly compensation stipulated in the FCT table ( The fellowship holder will have a personal accident insurance and, if not covered by any social protection scheme, can ensure the right to social security through adherence to the voluntary social insurance scheme, pursuant to “Código dos Regimes Contributivos do Sistema Previdencial de Segurança Social”. The monthly amount shall be rendered payable via bank transfer to an account held by the grantee.

Selection method: Candidates will be assessed based on their CV, aptitude and motivation (first stage of evaluation), including the relevance of their previous modelling, research and project experience (50%), reports and publications (35%) and cover letter (15%). The Selection Committee may decide on the need to have an interview (second stage of evaluation), in person or by tele-/videoconference. In that case, the final classification will be obtained by averaging the result of the first stage (50% weight) and second stage (50% weight) evaluations. The Selection Committee reserves the right not to select any candidate if none of the candidates possesses minimal requirements (final total classification higher than 50%).

Publication/notification of results: The final evaluation results will be publicized through an ordered list, and the candidates will be notified of the Jury decision by email.
