UA strengthens links with China
Changshu Institute of Technology and University of Aveiro sign a new Memorandum of Understanding
the President of that Institute, Prof. Dr. Zhu Shizhong, and Vice-Rector of the University of Aveiro, Professor Artur Silva. signing the agreement
The development of teaching staff exchanges and training of MSc students were at the centre of discussions today as the University of Aveiro (UA) welcomed officials from Changshu Institute of Technology (CIT) from PR China, a delegation led by the President of that Institute, Prof. Dr. Zhu Shizhong.

Cooperation between UA and CIT goes back to the 1990s when doctoral and post-doctoral researchers from CIT began to collaborate in the fields of physics, chemistry, materials science and electronics engineering. Building upon that relationship, CIT and UA today signed a new cooperation agreement that lays down the terms of deeper and broader inter-institutional relations. Staff exchanges towards the development of joint research programmes will be given priority in the coming years, and opportunities for MSc students from CIT to obtain their degree at UA were identified.

Researcher mobility between PR China and Portugal began in the late 1980s as part of UAs strategy to attract talented researchers in the key areas of materials science and technology, telecommunications and physics with some 15 post-doc places taken up annually since that time. In terms of UAs commitment to the dissemination of Chinese language and culture, in 1998, UA was Portugal’s first Higher Education Institution to offer a core curriculum in Chinese language and culture through its Masters Degree in Chinese Studies. In February 2015, UA welcomed and integrated a Confucius Institute on its campus. Through the Institute, some 2500 primary school students in the region are now studying Chinese.

Additional impetus into student mobility between PR China and Portugal came with the launch of the 1st and 2nd cycle degrees in Languages and Business Relations at the Department of Languages of Cultures of UA, in which Chinese language is a core foreign language. With the recruitment of Chinese staff in these areas, new contacts emerged that have led to the celebration of important bilateral agreements with international language schools in China that have invested in the mobility of Chinese students to UA to learn Portuguese language and linguistics. Under these mobility schemes, UA receives exchange students annually since 2011 in the field of language and culture.

The signing of today’s agreement Changshu Institute of Technology was presided over by the Vice-Rector of the University of Aveiro, Professor Artur Silva, who expressed his wish to see this agreement coming to fruition in the near future, in particular by promoting collaboration at the level of academic departments and research centers of both institutions.
