The University of Aveiro announces the open calls for one (1) one Postdoctoral Research Fellowship (BPD) in the scope of the project Urban Nature Labs (UNaLab; Grant Agreement No. 730052), financed by the European Union’s Horizon 2020 research and innovation programme.

The University of Aveiro (UAVR) – announces the open calls for one (1) one Postdoctoral Research Fellowship (BPD) in the scope of the project Urban Nature Labs (UNaLab; Grant Agreement No. 730052), financed by the European Union’s Horizon 2020 research and innovation programme (Topic SCC-2-2016-2017: Smart Cities and Communities Nature based solutions), project taking place in the Department of Environment and Planning and in the Associate Laboratory - Centre for Environmental and Marine Studies, Aveiro, Portugal, under the following conditions:

Position: Research Fellowship for candidates with a Ph.D. degree; Postdoctoral grant (BPD).

Admission requirements: Ph.D. degree in Environmental Sciences, Civil Engineering, Flooding Hydrology/Hydraulics or equivalent experience/qualification.

Essential selection criteria:

  • In-depth knowledge and broad experience with hydrological and/or flood hazard modelling, preferably in urban areas, as to assess the flood risk mitigation effectiveness of engineering as well as nature-based solutions.

  • Experience with hydrological and/or flood risk modelling and mapping software packages.

  • Experience with databases, data management, data examination and data representation.

  • Experience with data analysis, literature reviewing and reporting.

  • Ability to work harmoniously in a multi-disciplinary project and team environment.

  • Demonstrated enthusiasm, high personal professional standards, independence, motivation and commitment to the job.

  • Excellent written and spoken English.

Job description: The ‘Flood risk modeller´ will have as overarching task to assess and map, using simulation models, the impacts of selected measures to reduce flood risks in three front-runner cities (in Finland, Netherlands and Italy) under present-day and likely future conditions. The key responsibilities will be: (i) compile, analyse and manage the hydro-meteorological and flooding data that exist for the three front-runner cities; (ii) compile and analyse the information available from previous studies on hydrological and flood risk assessment and modelling for the three front-runner cities; (iii) select, set-up, calibrate and validate the most appropriate hydrological and flood risk model(s) for the three front-runner cities; (iv) assess the effectiveness of proposed engineering and nature-based solutions to mitigate flooding in the three front-runner cities under present-day and future conditions; (v) communicate the obtained results to colleagues and stakeholders by way of dialogue, public presentations, research reports and scientific papers; and (vi) provide data management, literature review, reporting and project support as required.

Legislation framework: A fellowship contract will be celebrated according to the regulations defined by FCT “Regulations for Advanced Training and Qualification of Human Resources”, in accordance with Portuguese Law 40/2004, of 18 August (Scientific Research Fellow Statute), as amended and republished by Decree-Law No. 202/2012 of 27 August, and as amended by Decree-Law No. 233/2012 of 29 October and by Law No. 12/2013, of January 29, and Decree-Law No. 89/2013 of 9 July as well as in accordance with the FCT, I.P. Fellowships Regulation, in force ( and UAVR’s Regulation of Scientific Research Grants, as approved on 20 May 2011.

Working place and Scientific supervision: The work will be carried out at the Department of Environment and Planning and Centre for Environmental and Marine Studies, University of Aveiro, and supervised by Dr. Jan Jacob Keizer and Dr. Peter Roebeling.

Grant duration: The grant will be for a period of 6 months and may be renewed until a maximum period of 36 months. Expected starting date is the 1st of November 2017. The attribution of the grant is undertaken under an exclusive dedication regime[i].

Monthly allowance: The monthly amount of the grant is 1495€ in accordance with the values stipulated by the “Regulations for Advanced Training and Qualification of FCT ( The fellowship holder will have a personal accident insurance and, if not covered by any social protection scheme, can ensure the right to social security through adherence to the voluntary social insurance scheme, pursuant to “Código dos Regimes Contributivos do Sistema Previdencial de Segurança Social”. The monthly amount shall be rendered payable via bank transfer to an account held by the grantee or another equivalent method.

Selection method: Candidates will be assessed based on their CV, aptitude and motivation (first stage of evaluation), including the relevance of their previous modelling, research and project experience (50%), reports and publications (35%) and cover letter (15%). The Selection Committee may decide on the need to have an interview (second stage of evaluation), in person or by tele-/videoconference. In that case, the final classification will be obtained by averaging the result of the first stage (50% weight) and second stage (50% weight) evaluations. The Selection Committee reserves the right not to select any candidate if none of the candidates possesses minimal requirements (final total classification higher than 50%)
