Between 20 May and 6 June 2017, at UA
European Maritime Day celebrated at the University of Aveiro
Dia Europeu do Mar comemorado na Universidade de Aveiro
The European Maritime Day is celebrated on 20 May and the University of Aveiro (UA) is organizing a set of events with the purpose of highlighting the existing scientific competences, as well as the region’s potential, namely in what concerns the theme of Ocean Renewable Energy. The programme includes, among others, “Ocean Laboratories”, a Round Table about Ocean Renewable Energy, the Ocean and Atmosphere Days, closing with a participation in the event Business2Sea.

The European Maritime Day is the annual meeting point for Europe’s maritime community to network, discuss and forge joint action. The European celebrations include the EMD conference and exhibition held in Poole, on 18-19 May 2017. Besides this event, the European Commission supports the organization of local events, in several European countries, and this year one of them is the programme proposed by the University of Aveiro under the theme “Ocean Renewable Energy in Aveiro”.

Considering that the Aveiro Region is one of the port areas with potential to set up a PORTUGAL PORT TECH CLUSTERS under the theme of Ocean Renewable Energy, the University of Aveiro, through its Sea Technology Platform, sought to design a programme with the main purpose of presenting the existing potential for challenges that may arise in this sector, namely in Aveiro, with market solutions, which may be adapted to this kind of industry (wind, waves, currents and tides), key scientific skills for the development of innovative solutions for some of the technological barriers found in this sector, among others.

This programme includes:

1. Ocean Laboratories, on relevant themes for companies operating in the sector of ocean renewable energy:

  • Laboratory of Electrochemistry and Corrosion (22 May), with Alexandre Bastos from the Department of Materials and Ceramics Engineering of UA
  • Laboratory of Electrochemical Processes for Energy Storage (23 May), with Duncan Fagg from the Department of Mechanical Engineering of UA
  • Laboratory of Applied Ecology and Ecotoxicology (25 May), with Roberto Martins from the Department of Biology of UA

These are informal sessions, in laboratory environment, to debate challenges presented by companies that have themselves been challenged by the Plataforma Tecnológica do Mar da UA (Sea Technology Platform of UA), during last year, and in which the companies will participate. Groups of max. 6 people per session. Registrations via e-mail Sessions will take place from 15h00 to 17h00, on the days referred above.

2. Round Table: Ocean Renewable Energy. This event will be held at Fábrica Centro Ciência Viva de Aveiro, on 26 May, at 17h30 with the participation of Ana Brito e Melo from Wavec, Ricardo Morgado from A. Silva Matos, João Tedim from CICECO – University of Aveiro, and with João Pedro Braga da Cruz from Administração do Porto de Aveiro, as moderator. It is an event open to all, free entry and no registration needed. For further information contact the organizers via email

Beyond the activities foreseen in the plan proposed to the European Commission, the European Maritime Day will also hold the Ocean and Atmosphere Journeys, Vestas’s visit to the UA, world leader in the sector of wind energy, "Aquatropolis - Open Day", TOXECO 2017- Talks on Toxicology and Ecotoxicology and the participation of the UA in the event Business2Sea.

The group of students in Meteorology, Oceanography and Geophysics, and the group of students in Marine Sciences are in charge of the Ocean and Atmosphere Journeys, which will take place on 23, 24 and 25 May 2017. This event is mainly addressed to the academic community, but it is also open to othersand it also includes a boat trip on board of Lancha Praia da Costa Nova, on Tuesday afternoon. On 31 May, TOXECO 2017- Talks on Toxicology and Ecotoxicology will be held in the auditorium of the Department of Biology of UA, between 15h00 and 18h30. Entrance is free and open to the public. A previous registration is nevertheless necessary via email

On 5 and 6 June, takes place the Business2Sea, in Porto. As usual, the UA will attend the event with an exhibition area within the Aveiro Region booth, displaying projects and prototypes.
