Ana Filipa Cláudio, researcher at the Department of Chemistry and at CICECO – Aveiro Institute of Materials, won the best poster award at the international conference 2nd EuGSC, 2nd EuCheMS Congress on Green and Sustainable Chemistry, held from 4 to 7 October in Lisbon. The awarded study concerns the extraction of triterpenic compounds from olive leaves, thus adding value to this residue coming from the olive oil industry, and proposes the use of aqueous solutions of ionic liquids as potential substitutes to volatile organic solvents, very often toxic and carcinogenic, commonly used to the purpose.

“This award represents a recognition of all the work and effort done over the last years”, says Ana Cláudio adding: “The fact that it is a work done in partnership with other groups shows that a multidisciplinary team can produce more and better results”.

The work developed by Ana Cláudio at the University of Aveiro (UA) in collaboration with the Vienna Technology University involves also Armando Silvestre, João Coutinho and Mara Freire, researchers of the University of Aveiro, as well as a research group of the Austrian university led by Katharina Bica.
